Bridging the gap between the gut microbiome and the brain

Our Research

Our lab will use a multidisciplinary approach that includes behavioral, pharmacological and microbiological techniques to better understand the role of gut microbiota in the vulnerability to develop addiction and substance use disorders across life.

Dr. Santiago Cuesta is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Cell Biology and Neuroscience at Rutgers University. Santiago was born in Rio Cuarto (Córdoba, Argentina). He then moved to Rosario (Santa Fe, Argentina) to study Biotechnology at the National University of Rosario. After receiving his PhD in Biological Sciences, he did a post-doc at McGill University (Montreal, Canada). In 2018, he joined Vanessa Sperandio’s lab at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center (Dallas, Texas) to perform a second post-doc. His research focused on understanding the neurobiology of addiction and substance use disorders across life, and how it is affected by different environmental factors, particularly, the gut microbiota.
